News - Michael Manley Community Self-Reliance Award 2009 - Entries Close May 26

The Chairman of the Michael Manley Foundation, Mr Delano Franklyn, has urged eligible self-reliant community groups to apply for the 2009 Michael Manley Award for Community Self-Reliance to meet the May 15 deadline for entries.

Mr Franklyn said that, in view of the occurrence of the tenth anniversary of the Foundation on May 21 and the fact that this year’s Emancipation Day presentation will be the tenth, the current competition will be a milestone in the history of the Awards and of the Foundation.

The award goes to the project that best exemplifies the Jamaican traditions of self-reliance and community cooperation. The 2009 winners will receive a cash prize of $200,000 and a bronze resin trophy sculpted by the renowned Kay Sullivan. The criteria include community initiative and participation; gender equity, where appropriate; sustainability; and economic, social, cultural and environmental impact. Youth participation is also a positive factor in the judging of projects.

There will also be a special $100,000 cash award, sponsored by the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ), for the project with the best credentials in Environmental Conservation or Child Survival and Development.
