Self-Reliance Award Entries Extended
The Chairman of the Michael Manley Foundation, Mr Delano
Franklyn, has announced the extension of the deadline for
receipt of entries for the Foundation’s 2010 Award for Community
Self-Reliance to Monday June 14.
The Michael Manley Award for Community Self-Reliance goes to
the project that best exemplifies the Jamaican traditions of
self-help and community cooperation. The required qualities
include community initiative and participation; gender equity;
youth involvement; sustainability; and economic, social,
cultural and environmental impact.
The winning project will earn a $200,000 cash prize and a
beautiful bronze resin trophy sculpted by Kay Sullivan. The
project with the best credentials in environmental conservation
or child survival and development will receive the special
Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ) Award of $100,000 and
a commemorative plaque.
Winners of the Michael Manley Award for Community
Self-Reliance have been the Manchioneal Community Club of
Portland; the Cave Island Citizens’ Association of Trelawny; the
Woodside Community Development Action Group and Jeffrey Town
Farmers’ Association of St Mary; the Maroon Town Community
Enterprise, Amity Hall Water Supply and Flanker Community
Development Centre, all of St James; Sturge Town Community
Development Committee of St Ann; the Association of Clubs of
Westmoreland; and the Woodford Homework Centre of St Andrew.
EFJ Awards have been won by Amity Hall Water Supply; Bowden
Pen Farmers’ Association of Portland; Holy Trinity Basic School
of St Andrew; Hampstead Water Supply of St Mary; St Catherine
Children’s Development Agency; and White Horses-Botany Bay-Pamphret
Water Supply & Sanitation of St Thomas
Projects must be at least two years old to be eligible for
entry and entry forms are available at the Michael Manley
