The Chairman of the Michael Manley Foundation, Mr Delano Franklyn, has announced that the deadline for entries for the twelfth annual Michael Manley Award for Community Self-Reliance and eighth annual Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ) Award has been extended for two weeks, to June 15, 2011.

The Michael Manley Award – a $200,000 cash prize and the beautiful Michael Manley Trophy, sculpted by Kay Sullivan – will go to the project that best exemplifies the Jamaican traditions of self-help and community cooperation, with the capacity to sustain itself; has been in operation for at least two years; has significant impact on community members; and, where appropriate, provides equal opportunity for participation by men and women without gender bias. Additional points will be scored by projects that advance cultural awareness, protect the natural environment or prevent environmental degradation, and involve young people.

The EFJ Award – a cash prize of $100,000 and a commemorative plaque – will be presented to the project with the best credentials in environmental conservation or child survival and development.

The Awards presentation will take place at the Little Theatre on Emancipation Day,
August 1. Entries must be submitted on an application form available on the Michael Manley Foundation website at www.michaelmanley.org or from the Michael Manley Foundation, 1A Hope Boulevard, Kingston 6.
