Projects
The Michael Manley Foundation organises three annual public events and has also established a Michael Manley Centre, a depository and showcase of Mr Manley's documents and memorabilia.

The annual projects are The Michael Manley Award for Community Self-Reliance, begun in 2000, and two events inaugurated in 2003 -- The Michael Manley Lecture by a distinguished lecturer of international stature, and Essay Competitions for secondary-level students in Jamaica and tertiary students throughout the Caribbean Community (Caricom) Region.

AWARDS FOR COMMUNITY SELF-RELIANCE
The first major project of the Michael Manley Foundation has been the annual Award for Community Self-Reliance. The award is presented to the project that best exemplifies the Jamaican tradition of community involvement and self-reliance. The required qualities include community initiative and participation; gender equity; sustainability; and economic, social, cultural and environmental impact. Youth participation is also an advantage.

The inaugural Michael Manley Award for Community Self-Reliance was presented on Emancipation Day, August 1, 2000  to a chicken-rearing cooperative of young people from Manchioneal, Portland. Recognising that there was no supplier   of  broiler meat in their area, they successfully negotiated capital funding from the Social Development Commission (SDC), contributed their own labour and management, and were soon supplying not only the community of Manchioneal but also other parts of Portland and adjacent parishes. They provided a by-product in fertiliser for crops in the area.
