Why A Foundation

In addition, there are the hundreds of Cabinet and other official documents containing the thinking behind public policy as well as the actual decisions taken by the Government led by Manley from 1972 to 1980 and from 1989 to 1992. There are also minutes of meetings of the Economic Council and of the PNP under Manley's leadership. Many of the official documents are now -- or will shortly become -- available under the Access to Information Act.

This potential treasure is widely dispersed in government archives, public institutions, PNP offices, family and private collections. So an urgent task for the Michael Manley Foundation is to identify this huge storehouse of text and audiovisual material, have it professionally documented and catalogued, duplicate where appropriate and store in a safe and accessible place to make it available for students, scholars and the general public.

The Foundation intends to establish a Michael Manley Centre to house, preserve and display these documents and memorabilia which are an invaluable part of Jamaica's national heritage. The Centre will be the primary medium through which the Foundation will accomplish its mission to preserve and promote the intellectual, political and philosophical legacy of Michael Manley.
