Why A Foundation

Preserve and Promote Manley's Intellectual, Political and Philosophical Legacy

Throughout his many years in public life -- as journalist, trade unionist, parliamentarian, political leader, Prime Minister and advocate of an equitable system of international economic relations -- Manley was an articulate spokesman for the causes that drove his commitment to public life. He combined the rare qualities of a thoughtful intellectual and a man of practical political affairs. A gifted speaker, clear thinker and writer, Manley spoke and wrote extensively on the burning issues of the day. His speeches and writings constitute a substantial body of work that must be preserved for their inherent value and promoted for their continued relevance.

Michael Manley's contribution has been recognised through many international honours such as the Order of the Caribbean Community; the UN Gold Medal for "significant contribution in cooperation with the United Nations and in solidarity with the South African liberation movement in the international campaign against apartheid", the World Peace Council's Joliot Curie Peace Award for "contribution to the struggle of the Jamaican people and all people of the non-aligned world fighting for economic independence" and Socialist International's Citation for "contribution to the world economic debate on the New International Economic Order and for contribution to the deepening of democracy in Jamaica and the Caribbean".
