Why A Foundation

Michael Manley's chapter in the story of human progress is unarguably worthy of preservation for future generations and for study and analysis by the people of Jamaica, the Caribbean region and the rest of the world. The Michael Manley Foundation is the vehicle to carry that banner

It is recognized that Michael Manley was the product of a unique Jamaican family -- with National Hero Norman Washington Manley as father and Edna Manley, pioneer of Jamaica's fine-arts movement, as mother. A Norman Manley Foundation and a separate Edna Manley Foundation are perpetuating the legacies of this remarkable couple.

Michael Manley's national and international contributions, unquestionably justify an independent Foundation which has been deliberately established as a non-partisan body with specific objectives. How can a non-partisan Foundation deal with the life of a person who was by his entire nature partisan? The answer is that close examination of Manley's life and what he stood for shows that he transcended the confines of Party and addressed broad epochal concerns. These non-partisan concerns are the focus of the Foundation.
