2003
The Foundation's second annual project, the Michael Manley Lecture,
was inaugurated at the Life of Jamaica auditorium, in New Kingston,
on January 27, 2003, with the Hon. Dr Kenny D. Anthony, Prime
Minister of St Lucia, the Lecturer. The event was originally scheduled for
the anniversary of Mr Manley's birth on December 10, but was
unavoidably postponed.
Annual Essay competitions for secondary-level students throughout
Jamaica and tertiary students throughout the Caribbean Community (CARICOM)
region were held for the first time in 2003. No award was made at
the secondary level, but the tertiary competition -- on the subject:
"How can Commonwealth Caribbean states survive under the doctrine of globalisation?" -- was won by Jermaine Spencer of the Mona Campus of
the UWI.
The Maroon Town
Community Enterprise of St James won the fourth annual Michael
Manley Award for Community Self-Reliance, presented at the Little
Theatre on Emancipation Day 2003. The Community Enterprise
manufactures banana and plantain chips from raw material produced in
the area and beyond. The Guest Speaker at the Award function was the
Most Hon. P.J. Patterson, Prime Minister, and cultural icon the Hon.
Louise Bennett-Coverley ('Miss Lou') made a special appearance.
The second Michael Manley Lecture was delivered by Sir George
Alleyne, Chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI) and
Director Emeritus of the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO),
at the Little Theatre on December 10, 2003.
