Chronology
The following is a year-by-year chronology of the Foundation.
1999 The Michael Manley Foundation was incorporated on May 21, 1999, to
preserve and promote the intellectual, political and philosophical
legacy of Michael Manley
2000
The Foundation's first major activity was the inaugural Award for
Community Self-Reliance, presented at the Little Theatre, Kingston
5, to a chicken-rearing cooperative of young people from Manchioneal,
Portland, on Emancipation Day, August 1, 2000. The Guest Speaker at
the Award function was Mr Randall Robinson, President of
Trans-Africa Forum, based in Washington, DC, USA.
2001
The Foundation presented its second annual Award for Community
Self-Reliance to the Cave Island Citizens' Association, in Trelawny,
which executed a number of projects, commercial and non-commercial,
including water supply and environmental sanitation. The Guest
Speaker on that occasion was Dr Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of
St Vincent & the Grenadines.
2002
The Foundation established its Secretariat at the headquarters of
the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU) at 1A Hope
Boulevard, Kingston 6, on May 13, 2002.
The Woodside Community Development Action Group of St Mary won the
2002 Michael Manley Award for Community Self-Reliance. The Action
Group carries out a range of activities to improve the economic
wellbeing of the citizens of Woodside as well as developing the
social and cultural capital of the village. The Guest Speaker at the
2002 presentation was Professor Rex Nettleford, Vice Chancellor of
the University of the West Indies.
